Cool Air - Run Better?

At last!!! It has cooled off in Dallas. I was riding 2 up last evening and looked down at the speedometer and we were going 70 MPH!!!! No straining, no roughness, and I felt like I had more to go.
Has anyone noticed improved performance in cooler weather? Does this have to do with an air cooled engine?
